How to pick the perfect vacation rental in North Lake Tahoe

With 71 miles of shoreline to explore—as well as dozens of ski resorts and charming small towns to discover—there’s no shortage of activities to enjoy in North Lake Tahoe. As the largest Alpine lake in the United States, North Lake Tahoe offers endless skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, and ice skating throughout the winter; as well as swimming, paddle boarding, canoeing, hiking, and fishing.

Follow these tips to help you pick the perfect North Lake Tahoe vacation rental for your travel plans.

  1. Where to stay near Lake Tahoe. When it comes to staying near the 22-mile long Lake Tahoe, there’s no shortage of options. To enjoy the lake year-round, stay in North Shore, near Waterman’s Landing at Patton’s Beach; West Shore, near Sugar Pine Point State Park; or Tahoe City, near Common’s Beach and Tahoe City Marina.
  2. Where to stay when visiting historic downtown Truckee. While many folks travel to North Lake Tahoe for the lake and the slopes, don’t overlook this old timey western town located less than 15 miles from the lakefront. Stay near the iconic Donner Pass or the Truckee River to have quick access to historic Donner Memorial State Park Visitor Center, downtown Truckee and all the shops and restaurants it has to offer, as well as a short drive down to the Sugarbowl Ski Resort.
  3. Where to stay near ski resorts. If you’re hoping to enjoy the slopes of North Lake Tahoe’s infamous ski resorts—including Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Northstar, and Diamond Peak—stay in Tahoe Vista or Kings Beach, which are both less than a half hour away. While you’re at it, enjoy what the two cities have to offer, such as lodging along the lakeshore, authentic Mexican food, and the Tahoe Flow Arts Studio.
  4. Where to stay when planning to gamble. The Nevada side of North Lake Tahoe has become a popular spot for visitors hoping to bank on good luck. Once home to Frank Sinatra and his rat pack, Crystal Bay is home to hot gambling spots such as the Crystal Bay Casino, the Tahoe Biltmore Casino, and Jim Kelley’s Tahoe Nugget. In addition to gambling, visitors can also enjoy live music at the Crystal Bay Club.
  5. Where to stay when fishing along or near Lake Tahoe. Because Lake Tahoe is too deep to freeze, fishing charters on the hunt for mackinaw, rainbow, and brown trout run year-round. Plan to stay along the Truckee River on the West Shore, the Boca and Stampede Reservoirs off Interstate 80, or Donner Lake.
  6. How to choose your own North Lake Tahoe rental experience. North Lake Tahoe has something to offer for everyone. Post up in one of the region’s small towns to relive the pioneer days, in the mountains to ski, or along the lake to relax. Whether you’re fishing for adventure on the slopes or hunting for a serene escape from reality, North Lake Tahoe is a perfect getaway.
